Financial Support for Authors

The Open Access publication model of Copernicus Publications requires the author to cover the Article Processing Charges (APC) based on the number of published pages. These service charges include all costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication and long term archiving. However, the following information provides the authors with the possibilities of service charge waivers or reductions.

  Article Processing Charge Waivers

All journals provide at least 10% of the previous year's page budget to be assigned to authors lacking support of funds. showAfter a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the authors may contact the Copernicus Publications Editorial Support (editorial@copernicus.org) to apply for partial or full APC waivers, which will be granted subject to support by the handling editor and approval by the respective chief editor. In special cases, such as long review manuscripts, the authors may contact the chief editor prior to submission. hide

Research Organizations

First Authors affiliated to Research Units of the Max Planck Society

If the first author is affiliated to one of the research units of the Max Planck Society, the authors will not be invoiced for submissions according to categories 1 and 2. showWith regard to categories 3 and 4, only the difference to the respective lower category 1 or 2 will be charged (category 3 belongs to 1, 4 belongs to 2). The basic service charges according to category 1 and 2 will be settled automatically between Copernicus Publications and the Max Planck Society. This arrangement is valid for any submissions after 1 January 2008 (receipt of electronic manuscript file). hide

  First Authors affiliated to Research Units of CNRS INSU

If the first author is affiliated to one of the research units of the Institut National des Sciences de l’Univers du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the authors will not be invoiced for submissions according to categories 1 and 2. showWith regard to categories 3 and 4, only the difference to the respective lower category 1 or 2 will be charged (category 3 belongs to 1, 4 belongs to 2). The basic service charges according to category 1 and 2 will be settled automatically between Copernicus Publications and the INSU. This arrangement is valid for any submissions after 1 July 2008 (receipt of electronic manuscript file). It is mandatory for the primary author to identify his/her affiliation to INSU using the following format:

Universities and Institutions

First Authors affiliated to Institutes of the Georg-August-University Göttingen

If the first author is affiliated to one of the institutes of the Georg-August-University Göttingen, the authors will not be invoiced for submissions according to categories 1 and 2. showWith regard to categories 3 and 4, only the difference to the respective lower category 1 or 2 will be charged (category 3 belongs to 1, 4 belongs to 2). The basic service charges according to category 1 and 2 will be settled automatically between Copernicus Publications and the SUB (Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen). This arrangement is valid for any submissions after 1 January 2009 (receipt of electronic manuscript file). hide

  EGU Service Charges Waivers

The EGU waives the service charges for publications in their journals with an amount of at least 10% of the previous year's page budget to be assigned to authors lacking support of funds. showAfter a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the authors may contact the Copernicus Publications Editorial Support (editorial@copernicus.org) to apply for partial or full APC waivers, which will be granted subject to support by the handling editor and approval by the respective chief editor. Funders

  Projects funded by the European Commission

In the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), publication fees are eligible for reimbursement. Details can be found in the FP7 model Grant Agreement (article II.16.4) .

  Projects funded by the DFG

The German Research Foundation DFG supports publication charges with €750 per year. This support can also be accumulated over the 3 years period of funding. Please see the bulletin Merkblatt für Anträge auf Sachbeihilfe . Authors have to apply for this.

Projects funded by NWO

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) covers up to €5,000 publication charges for each NWO-funded research project. Applications have to be made by the project leaders. For further information please visit the NWO website .

  Projects funded by the Volkswagen Foundation
